MonsterDraft Top 5 Quarterbacks

Written by Tim Riley

In fantasy football, regardless of your league’s specific structure, quarterback is a position you must get solid production from. The good news is- a productive starting QB is relatively easy to find. Aside from Tom Brady, who played out of his mind in 2007, there was surprisingly little separation between QB’s like Peyton Manning, drafted in most first rounds- and undrafted players like Kurt Warner and Derek Anderson. Manning finished ’07 with 268 points in a standard scoring system. Warner and Anderson finished with 199 and 243 respectively. Certainly Manning’s additional points were useful, but from a pure value standpoint- players like Warner and Anderson offered season changing value.

Carson PalmerThe MonsterDraft draft guide can customize your draft board with player values based on your league’s specifications- including number of teams, starting line-up structure, points awarded per yardage/scoring play, and various other critical factors. That numerical value will be useful on draft day when you’re trying to decide between players at different positions.

Here are the top 5 quarterbacks the tool produced after entering specifications of a ten team league with 4 points for a passing TD, 1 point for per 50 yards passing, and 1 point deduction per interception. Some scoring systems may place more importance on passing yardage- while others may not penalize a QB for throwing interceptions. As a MonsterDraft member, you can enter your specific scoring system- and receive a draft guide with player values calculated just for you.

#5- Carson Palmer- Bengals. 2007 was not the best season for Carson- because he cares mostly about winning and 7-9 was not the record he was looking for. But his fantasy numbers were solid- and he passed for the most yardage of his career (4,100 yards). Word on the street is that Rudi Johnson is in the best shape of his life. If the Bengals RB could just stay healthy- Palmer will power one of the best passing attacks in the league- and pile on the fantasy points.

Drew Brees#4- Drew Brees- Saints. Brees had more attempts than any other QB in 2007. More than any QB in history for that matter (655). That’s good for fantasy owners- plenty of scoring opportunity. 4,400 yards passing and 28 touchdowns is hard to ignore. After a bit of a slow start in 2007- fantasy owners were concerned they might have made a mistake in selecting Brees- but he proved more than worthy. The Saint’s are a solid playoff contender with a potent offense- and Brees is a quality, 16 week fantasy starter.

Tony Romo#3- Tony Romo- Cowboys. The fact that Romo hasn’t been a stellar post-season QB doesn’t amount to a hill of beans for fantasy football owners. His 4,200 yard- 36 TD 2007 effort was second only to Tom Brady in most scoring systems- and it looks to be more of the same for 2008. WR Terrell Owens and TE Jason Witten are as good as the league has to offer at those positions- and could conceivably be even better as they gel into a third year with Tony. The addition of rookie RB Felix Jones could take the offense to another level- and that would put them in unchartered territory. All of it will be good for Romo’s numbers- and he won’t be on the draft board as long in 2008 as he was in 2007.

Peyton Manning#2- Peyton Manning- Colts. Recent news regarding surgery to remove an infected bursa sac from his knee doesn’t figure to affect Manning’s 2008 campaign. And if it’s anything like his other seasons- he will easily maintain his reputation as a fantasy stud. Peyton has surpassed 4, 000 yards passing an amazing 8 times in ten seasons. Despite losing his top target Marvin Harrison for much of 2007- Peyton still tossed for 4,000 yards and 31 TD’s. If Marvin returns to form- it will be another aerial display in Indianapolis. Even if he doesn’t- Manning will continue to cultivate youngster Anthony Gonzalez and keep his numbers in the stratosphere. Manning will be gone before the third round and deliver week in and week out.

Tom Brady#1- Tom Brady- Patriots. Water cooler conversations regarding the best 2008 fantasy QB’s skip right past number one and go to number two. There is no debate here. Enter virtually any numbers you want in the MonsterDraft analyzer- Brady will still emerge on top of the QB list. It’s not likely that Brady will repeat his 4,800, 50 TD touchdown- but all the offensive pieces are in place to make another amazing run. And even if interceptions are weighted heavily in your league- Brady threw a ridiculously low 8. In the land of QB’s- Brady is King- end of story.
